Making Self-Care a Priority Toward Better Health and Wellness for Brio Living Services Team Members
Self-Care Month runs from June 24 through Self-Care Day celebrated on July 24, or 7-24. That date is symbolic because self-care can be practiced “24 hours a day/7 days a week,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This year’s Self -Care Month marks the 5th anniversary of WHO launching the first global guideline on self-care interventions for health and well-being. Self-Care Month raises awareness about taking better care of ourselves and, in turn, helps us lead a healthier life.
Self-care encompasses physical, emotional, social, spiritual, psychological, and professional health and is made up of actions and interventions. Actions include habits and lifestyle choices we make to help take care of our health, including:
- Regular physical activity
- Eating a healthier diet
- Looking after our mental health
- Quitting or cutting down on alcohol and tobacco
Self-care interventions are evidence-based tools that support self-care, such as taking medicine, seeing a healthcare provider, and other diagnostic and digital tools, with the goal of making us active participants in our own healthcare.
At Brio Living Services, we recognize the importance of self-care in creating a healthy work-life balance. Jessica Finley, SHRM-CP, Benefits & Wellness Manager at Brio Living Services, shares many of the programs that Brio offers its team members year-round to promote a healthy work-life balance.
“Here at Brio, we care about our team members, which is why our Wellness Program is open for all,” says Jessica. “Our Wellness Program encompasses all aspects of self-care. We offer a variety of different activities throughout the year like our No Scale New Year, which emphasizes the importance of proper sleep and healthy eating habits at the start of the New Year. We also provide 1-on-1 meetings for team members to visit with a certified financial advisor at no cost to help ensure their financial wellness.”
Other Brio social activities include the annual softball outing and team meet and greet in June. For those who are looking for a physical challenge, Brio offers an annual Couch to 5K as well, giving team members a 10-week exercise routine to improve their physical fitness. Watch for this starting July 29!
“Rather than just telling team members it’s good to have a healthy work/life balance, we take action by providing financial support and offering quarterly family fun events for free!” says Jessica. “Our last drawing was to the Chelsea Fair’s first ever concert with Niko Moon in August!”
Brio also understands that life can be unpredictable and stressful at times, which is why it offers the team member (employee) assistance program, or EAP. “This resource is available to our team members and those living in their household at no cost to them,” explains Jessica. “Our team members work day in and day out to take care of older adults, and we value each and every one of them. It’s why we offer assistance to anyone looking to improve their own physical, mental, and emotional health. This resource offers personal assistance immediately and is available 24/7.”
