“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” – Socrates
Today is Earth Day! This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet.” Now is the time for unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, families, and livelihood.
At Brio Living Services, our vision is a world in which all are empowered to age well. Our vision expands to taking care of our earth for future generations and is an important part of our Guiding Belief of Stewardship. For example, at The Cedars of Dexter, our residents and team members are committed to taking individual action to invest in our planet. Residents recently hosted a screening of the documentary, “A Plastic Ocean,” highlighting the dangers of plastics in our ecological and water systems. By 2050, it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. As part of the Earth Week events, residents also learned the basics of recycling, such as recycling clean bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard; keeping food and liquid out of recycling; and no loose plastic bags or bagged recyclables. In addition, The Cedars of Dexter has LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) Certified buildings, the most widely used green building system in the world.
The Cedars of Dexter Executive Director, Natalie Jentzen says, “The residents here are extremely passionate about contributing to a better world and have found unique ways to do so in their daily lives, and even within our dining program. Together we have realized that even small changes can have a big impact!”
Fifty years ago, the first Earth Day started an environmental revolution. Now, Brio Living Services joins Governor Whitmer’s MI Health Climate Plan, aiming to protect Michiganders’ public health and the environment by putting Michigan on a path to becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. Brio also joins more than 1 billion people across 192 countries to celebrate Earth Day, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
